¿Qué, no dices nada?

El cSkip to content

# Conor McGregor called out by UFC legend Anderson Silva as pair trade jabs over Twitter

UFC legend Anderson Silva has called out Conor McGregor in a scintillating tweet just days after the Irishman made his long-awaited return to the Octagon.

Silva, widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, decided to take the step after McGregor spoke highly of him in the build-up to his comeback fight against Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone last weekend.

After his 40-second demolition of Cerrone in their welterweight showdown at UFC 246, ‘The Notorious’ told ESPN: “I would love to see the Anderson Silva fight. I’ve said that before.

“He was one of my idols growing up. I’d love to compete against him before we call it a day.

“He’s still fighting at a high level. He’s still very, very much in the picture. I’d like to test myself against him.”

And Silva has now responded to the former two-division champion by suggesting a fight could be on the cards at middleweight.

He tweeted: “I have a huge admiration for the great athlete that Conor is and I believe this super fight would be something historic for the sport, neither of us has anything else to prove.

“I believe UFC and sport fans would like to watch this great martial spectacle, testing my martial skills against him would be fantastic.

McGregor then fired back by tweeting: “I accept.”

Silva went on to propose the pair fight at 80kg, which converts to 176lbs – slap bang in the middle of the welterweight and middleweight limit.

“I know UFC wants to make money with this fight and I’m sure that when I signed a new contract they would want an immediate title fight, but money is not a problem for McGregor or me,” he added.

“Let’s make this historic super fight, 176 pounds [catchweight].”

Silva, who turned 45 earlier this month, is currently the oldest fighter on the UFC roster.

The Brazilian was recently stripped of his last two wins after testing positive for banned substances, but is keen to bow out with a mega-money showdown against McGregor.

McGregor, meanwhile, is hoping to fight a staggering three more times this year after beating Cerrone.

And UFC president Dana White is currently in negotiations to make his proposed showdown with former lightweight title challenger Justin Gaethje a reality.

White has also confirmed McGregor is next in line to challenge the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s unification bout with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18.

McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to hold world titles in two different weight classes simultaneously by defeating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title in November 2016.

Nurmagomedov relieved him of the 155lbs strap 23 months later, submitting the outspoken Irishman in the fourth round of their UFC 229 grudge match, which was marred by a post-fight brawl.

Silva’s middleweight title reign came to an end in July 2013, when he was knocked out by Chris Weidman in the second round of their UFC 162 showdown.

He suffered a horrendous broken leg in the pair’s rematch six months later but incredibly returned to the Octagon in 2015.
